300 PPI is a common high-quality print setting, not a universal requirement. The right value depends on the printer, the paper and the viewing distance.

- 300 PPI is offered as a common high-quality print starting value, not a requirement. It is always editable.
- Pixels are assumed to be square and the image is assumed to be printed without cropping.
- No quality verdict is applied to the result. Perceived print quality depends on the original image, the printer, the paper and the viewing distance.
- Physical sizes are calculated at full precision and rounded only for display.
Questions
Why does the print get smaller when I raise the PPI?
The image has a fixed number of pixels. Raising the density packs more of them into each inch, so the same pixels cover less paper. Lowering the density spreads them over more paper.
Do I have to print at 300 PPI?
No. 300 PPI is a widely used working value for photographic printing held at reading distance, and it is offered here as an editable starting point. Large prints viewed from further away are routinely printed at lower densities.
Will my print look good at this size?
This calculator answers a geometric question, not a quality one. Perceived quality depends on the sharpness of the original, the printer, the paper and the viewing distance, so no quality verdict is offered here.
Is PPI the same as the DPI setting on my printer?
No. PPI describes how many image pixels map to an inch of paper. DPI describes how many ink dots the printer places in an inch, which is usually a much larger number. See the PPI and DPI guide for the difference.
